And for sure, Dungy can be counted among those who do exactly that. "I love a person who talks kindly to plants," poet Camille Dungy writes in her new contemplative memoir. Camille Dungy leaves the dead stalks of her sunflowers standing for winter interest and the occasional bird visitor. ![]()

The inhabitants accuse the authorities of not acting fast enough. Soon the town is overrun with the mysterious deaths of thousands of rats, who stumble out of their hiding places in a daze, let out a drop of blood from their noses and expire. Then, with the pacing of a thriller, the horror begins. ‘Oran is an ordinary town,’ writes Camus, ‘nothing more than a French Prefecture on the coast of Algeria.’ The inhabitants lead busy money-centered and denatured lives they barely notice that they are alive. The book – written in sparse, haunting prose – takes us through a catastrophic outbreak of a contagious disease in the lightly fictionalised town of Oran on the Algerian coast, as seen through the eyes of the novel’s hero, a Doctor Rieux, a version of Camus himself.Īs the novel opens, an air of eerie normality reigns. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() How would the world be different if Jesus had had a wife who had been part of the story? Would western culture and Christianity have evolved somewhat differently? Would women and their stories have found more inclusion and equality? THE BOOK OF LONGINGS invites readers to contemplate these questions, and reconsider the story we thought we always knew. In particular, this novel explores the longings and “largeness” within women, addresses the importance of women’s stories and voices, and encourages readers to grapple with the inherent sexism in society and western religion. In a voice that is assured and intoxicating, the novel takes up many of the signature themes of Kidd’s fiction: feminism, the bonds between women, the search for self, and the quest for one’s voice and purpose in life. THE BOOK OF LONGINGS is a novel Sue Monk Kidd was born to write-a powerfully imagined, beautifully composed, fully realized story of a young woman who realizes her passion and potential against great odds. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The object is defined through the act of gazing by the gazer based on their character and development. Freud stretched out the theory of the gaze through the term “scopophilia.” Driven by libido, the individual gets a pleasurable feeling by gazing at the object. The concept of the gaze originated primarily from Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan. The goal of this paper is to collapse the binary of male and female and justify the self-identity of marginalized groups represented by the Binewski family. Finally, this paper centers on the crowd’s gaze on the Binewski family and how the family members collapse the stereotype about them to establish their self-identity. Next, this paper elaborates on the gaze of mass media represented by the camera’s gaze, specifically explaining how it exerts influence on consumers but fails to affect Oly. I will then contrast the male gaze and female gaze in the novel, collapsing the binary of male and female. First, this paper gives a brief introduction about the gaze theory. This paper will focus on the gaze in the book through four sections. Reading the book from the perspective of the gaze creates a new understanding about marginalized groups. Previous scholarship has barely touched upon these topics in Geek Love. A close reading of the novel reveals opportunities to apply gaze theory to analyze it. Geek Love reckons with patriarchal themes and the marginalization of “freaks,” represented in the novel by the Binewski family. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Bush (known here as “Gampy”) set out on a nighttime search for his young granddaughter’s misplaced stuffed animal, with a band of Secret Service agents trailing with flashlights, or when prankster Jenna’s water broke at her baby shower (even her husband didn’t believe it because the sisters had fibbed in the past).
